Fantastic Four (2015) - TRAILER REACTION

Ten years ago we had Fantastic 4 - a film adaptation of the popular comic book family consisting of Reed Richards, Susan and Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, who suffered space radiation alongside the suspiciously-named Victor Von Doom and became the Fantastic Four and Dr Doom, who became pitted against each other. This was followed by Rise of the Silver Surfer back in 2007, and the franchise died quickly.
Ten years later, we have a reboot - Fantastic Four - with a sequel scheduled for 2017 (ten years after the sequel to the last franchise). This film has been kept close under wraps by Twentieth Century Fox, but today, at long last, the first poster and trailer were revealed...only they revealed very little.
While the trailer did seem to start off akin to Interstellar (but please can it be a lot better), it did work in teasing this new movie, even if it does seem to have come at least a month too late to do so. The visual FX musn't be anywhere near finished yet, although what's shown here is good. I like the mystery approach to the film, and if this is how its selling itself - watch the movie and find out what its about - then this could work.
Fox clearly see X-Men: Days of Future Past as a massive success, as they seem to want to stick that in the trailer and on the poster, which is understandable, although saying its from the studio who made that film is a little sneaky. Fox gave us the last version of this franchise (which bombed at the box office) and have given us X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (two not particularly popular movies), so it doesn't seem as justified as Marvel Studios putting their name over Guardians of the Galaxy, selling almost every film they had made up to that point, although I understand the reason.
I hope this bleak, realistic tone isn't kept throughout the movie, and it actually has a creative heart in it. These characters are silly, and director Josh Trank should remember that. Trying to Nolan-ize the Fantastic Four is a bad idea, certainly if The Amazing Spider-Man is anything to go by.
One criticism brought up by fans is that the Four themselves might not get their trademark costumes, something that I hope they include. From the looks of one shot in the trailer, they might have costumes of sorts (see below), but I doubt they'll be bright blue for the sake of being a bit more grounded.
Fantastic Four is a gamble that I hope pays off. If its great, I look forward to 2017. If it isn't, I wonder if that'll be it for the Fantastic Four on the big screen.
Fantastic Four is released on August 6th in the UK and August 7th in the US.
