Thoughts on UK Box Office (22 - 24th August 2014)

OK, so I finally found the Top 10 films at the box office last weekend, and it really did intrigue me. Lucy was No 1, which I was surprised by, especially considering my screening was almost empty! Maybe it just isn't top of the pops where I live. Lucy, however, deserves this high box office and hopefully it'll carry on doing well at the box office. Maybe Luc Besson can make a Black Widow movie next?
The film that unexpectedly didn't fare too well was 'Doctor Who: Deep Breath', coming at No 8 on the Box Office that weekend. This was a surprise, but at the end of the day, there are big reasons why it didn't fare too well:

  1. Everyone is still on holiday: most people who would go and see Deep Breath at the cinema were on holiday at the time, and seeing as the release date and cinema announcement came so late, they wouldn't be able to go and see it at all.
  2. It wasn't in 3D: yeah, all those who say 3D is dying...it isn't. In fact, I've seen more films in 3D this year than I have in previous years. All the big box office hits were in 3D, so add this with the fact that Deep Breath would be the same quality as watching it on TV, it doesn't seem quite worth it.
  3. It's nothing special. Its not the 50th Anniversary, not even Christmas, so why bother seeing a season opener at the cinema when you can watch it at home? If there is nothing to celebrate, why spend the extra dosh?
I hope this doesn't kill Doctor Who's hopes for a cinematic franchise in future (something that would be greatly appreciated while its popular BBC). Seeing as Deep Breath did well in New Zealand and Australia, not to mention the fact that for its one screening at one time it got into the Top 10 of the weekend, added with the show's popularity, maybe we'll see a movie sometime soon. Its clear that that is what fans want, not just a TV episode on the big screen.
The other big films were 'The Inbetweeners 2', which isn't surprising, as well as 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (now a box office smash-hit worldwide) and other new films débuts.
