Doctor Who: Into the Dalek (Series 8, Episode 2) - REVIEW

"Nah, I'd rather stay outside if that's OK?"
The Daleks are back - again. The current companion falls in love with a really nice guy - again. We meet a good Dalek - again. The good Dalek turns evil - again. The Doctor gets compared to the Daleks - again.
Yeah, this story isn't the most original in the Universe. In fact, the original aspect to the story is how it goes about all of this. To be honest, I think Phil Ford did a great job of writing the Daleks, and it seemed like a similar approach in terms of style to Nicholas Briggs' work, particularly on Dark Eyes. This is how the Daleks should be.
Of course amongst all of this great Phil Ford Dalek storyline we have Clara falling in love with Danny Pink - a new Maths teacher at Coal Hill School, with the unique characteristics of being really nice, a soldier who obviously made a mistake making him quiet and supposedly complex who is "a bit of a lady killer". Actually, I'd laugh if the non-soldier he killed was a lady. Just for the hell of it Moffat, do it. Actually, just get rid of him already. We've seen love stories in Doctor Who before, we've met the really nice boyfriends before, we've seen enough of all this and we certainly don't need it again. The finale is called 'Death in Heaven' - and Danny Pink isn't immortal, is he? OK, either kill him off or he's a villain. Actually, the villain aspect would be great. I can really see him as a villain. Samuel Anderson has the villain voice. There we go, the Episode 11 cliffhanger - Danny Pink turns out to be The Master, having escaped Gallifrey! Then Clara kills him and he regenerates into Benedict Cumberbatch! There, you can have that one Mr Moffat.
The Coal Hill School sequences certainly don't feel quite right in this episode, but I can see why they are here and I won't moan too much about them. They feel like the Steven Moffat parts of the episode, although did we really need a cringe-worthy sequence with the Secretary? Also, please can that girl who's appeared these last two episodes NOT be Danny Pink's sister? Please? I don't want a repeat of that Angie girl from Series 7B...
Anywho, we have Daleks! Sure, they don't kick as much backside as in Dalek, but this is a definite step-up. Its just a shame I have little faith that old Rusty will go anywhere in the grand scheme of Who. Prove me wrong Moffat! Prove me wrong! Please...?
This episode once again features a lot of new music, Ben Wheatley impresses with his small Dalek battle and the episode is a visual piece of art. People actually die! Of course, we have the brief Heaven scene...for some reason.
To be honest though, I really did enjoy the episode. It felt fresh, even when dealing with not-so-original concepts and the final twist that Rusty isn't good but in fact is just a Dalek that hates Daleks and finds a common foe with the humans just sits right with me. Although, there is something about Peter Capaldi nick-naming the Dalek 'Rusty' that doesn't seem quite right...
Overall, a great episode, albeit with flaws. 9/10
