Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) - Teaser Trailer Reaction

Oh boy. So Sony Pictures have dropped the teaser trailer for their upcoming Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far From Home (sequel to Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War and the as-yet-unreleased Avengers: Endgame, not The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, definitely not Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 and sadly not Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), and I have some thoughts on it.

Firstly, digging the trailer music. Took me a few seconds to work out what it was, but when I did, I absolutely loved it. Kinda hoping Michael Giacchino resurrects his one-off motif in Homecoming as the main theme for this flick (or at least the end credits). From a visual perspective though, this has the same weirdly-flat colour palette Homecoming had, the slightly iffy CGI (especially on the suit) and the oddly stilted direction - which, especially since Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse came out and blew everyone away, is even more disappointing. I just don't think Jon Watts is a very good Spider-Man director, or at least a particularly interesting one. At least Homecoming had a pretty good script though, so here's hoping Far From Home has an even better one (although, again, when you've just released Into the Spider-Verse, it's gonna seem pretty mediocre in comparison).

Looking at what's previewed in the trailer itself though, I quite like the globe-hopping premise in context, and it looks like we'll get some fun school scenes between Peter, Ned, MJ, Flash and the others (I'm sure an underrated highlight will be their reactions to staying in such a shoddy hotel), not to mention that the new suit/s look nice...even if the CG render is painfully obvious and distinct from the live-action suit. Seriously guys, how has your CG gotten worse since 2004? Saying that, the Elementals look quite well-realised, and SHIELD Spidey sounds like a fun concept. I'm always happy to see more Nick Fury and Maria Hill (the latter of whom only appears in one brief shot), and Jon Favreau...is also here. I love Jon Favreau, but I'm a little uncertain about Happy being a main character again. But then we come to Jake Gyllenhall as...wait, hang on, Dr. Mysterio?! What? Why not just call him Mysterio? Unless there's gonna be a cracking Doctor Who joke in there, I'm just baffled. Maybe if they'd cast Peter Capaldi as Dr. Mysterio it would've been more fun. Jake Gyllenhall just seems to be playing a cool, badass, heroic version of Mysterio, and that's not really Mysterio. Sorry, but if you're going to use characters like Mysterio, please indulge in the cheesiness inherent in those characters. They're not cool. I'll let you off with Michael Keaton as Vulture (cos Michael Keaton) but...I'm just disappointed. Even the costume looks toned-down. In a film series in which the Winter Soldier duel-wielded a giant rifle and a talking space Raccoon with a massive gun to fight an alien army in the middle of a fictional Afro-futuristic country, its just a bit tame.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will be released on July 5th 2019.
