Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - Teaser Trailer Reaction

Ten years after the release of Iron Man, Marvel Studios is commemorating the anniversary of their Cinematic Universe franchise in a big, special cross-over bonanza Avengers: Infinity War, featuring Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, the Vision, the Winter Soldier, the Falcon, War Machine, Spider-Man, Black Panther, the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team...and I think I've missed quite a few out still. This a huge event film, with a reported $500 million budget (or $1 billion combined with Avengers 4) and massive fan anticipation. Will it all be worthwhile? I guess we'll find out next April.

The teaser trailer opens with Nick Fury's line from Marvel's Avengers Assemble (yes, I know its just Marvel's The Avengers in the US, but I'm British): "There was an idea...to bring together a group of remarkable people...to see if we could become something more...so when they needed us, we could fight the battles...that they never could". This line is shared between Fury, Tony Stark, Vision, Thor and Natasha Romanoff as we get a variety of somber-looking intro clips for each character. Doctor Strange and Wong discover a beaten-up Bruce Banner, who's talking to Natasha later; a disguised Vision is comforted by Wanda Maximoff; and Tony Stark appears to be stranded on some strange orange world. Across this, we have surprisingly not just generic trailer music by the Alan Sylvestri Avengers Assemble theme, which plays in 'trailer version' for the rest of this teaser.

The somber mood is maintained as Peter Parker witnesses a giant doughnut - more likely spaceship - land in New York City, which he appears to be fighting on in his Iron Spider costume from Homecoming, which admittedly looks a bit tacky, but fun all the same. Tony, Bruce, Wong and Doctor Strange too appear to be witnessing this from the Sanctum Sanctorum, as Thanos (Josh Brolin) makes his dramatic portal entrance...and one can't help but feel a little underwhelmed. It appears that the CG rendering is all done, but the compositing and lighting on Thanos doesn't appear to be quite there yet. Great texturing and detail, but he doesn't look like he's actually in the location. Also, the lack of armour does keep throwing me off, given its what audiences have associated with Thanos since Marvel's Avengers Assemble back in 2012.

Loki appears to be handing Thanos - or one of his henchmen at least - the Tesseract (presumably stolen from Asgard before its destruction), looking quite battered and bruised and stepping over some dead bodies. No sign of Korg or Valkyrie, but its safe to say we probably won't see much of them for fear of spoilers. It's odd how this small scene looks the best in the whole trailer - at least in terms of cinematography. There's actual contrast in the image for once, and the blue and orange lights really stick out: it's beautiful to look at.

There also appears to be a section of the film set in Wakanda, with King T'Challa allying himself with Cap, Black Widow, Falcon, Bucky, War Machine and the Hulk (who must be getting around a bit in this film, given that he was last seen with Thor, and then with Tony and Doctor Strange) for a big showdown with Thanos' army...who may or may not be the Chitauri, who knows? The Hulkbuster shows up with an altered design to sell a lot of toys, and who can blame Disney? Even I've got a mini-Hulkbuster sitting on my shelf. Wanda and Vision appear to be fighting Thanos' henchmen in the street with Cap and Black Widow's help (although this could simply be the way the teaser's been cut), although Vision's mind-stone appears under threat.

Then we get a poorly-rendered Iron Man squaring off against a frowning Thanos as he mentions having a smile across his face...it's a bit of an awkward moment, considering the shaky CG and the mis-match of the line and footage. Thankfully though, we get a cool hero shot from Wakanda leading into the logo reveal, as the big Avengers march thunders in!

And then - just in case all that wasn't enough - Thor meets the Guardians of the Galaxy! It's a nice tease, given their reportedly huge role in the film, and it's also good to see Thor sans eye; the recent Vanity Fair photoshoot showed Thor with both eyes (albeit with a scar) and his trusty hammer back, with did cause many fans to worry. That appears to have simply been for that photoshoot, as Thor's looking pretty Post-Ragnarok here - and thensome.

So, is this teaser trailer any good? It's masterfully edited to ensure minimal spoilers, few reveals and plenty of fan-service. The inclusion of the actual Avengers theme is wonderful, and there is a genuine sense of build-up, of teasing the film. I'm sure we'll get a full theatrical trailer in a few months' time revealing more from the film to get us really excited, but for our first look, I have to admit that I'm glad I'm not too over-the-moon. Marvel are giving us very little, but promising a lot. Perhaps this could be to the film's detriment (see the fan response to Avengers: Age of Ultron for an example of over-hype), but I'm pleased to see their confidence is not giving us everything at once. This is a simple teaser trailer, and that's all it needs to be.

Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War will be released on 27th April 2018 in the UK, and 4th May 2018 in the US.
