Doctor Who: Silver Nemesis (1988) - 25 Anniversary Special

Personally, I'm not a fan of Sylvester McCoy's Doctor or his era. I've never been that tempted to buy it on DVD, let alone watch episodes of the internet. It all looks quite daft. I only bought the DVD of Silver Nemesis because it came in a box-set with Revenge of the Cybermen (1975), but upon watching it, I found it really enjoyable!
Revenge isn't a brilliant Cyberman story. In fact, they barely appear despite being in the title. I found it very disappointing, considering it was apparently 'better' than Silver Nemesis. But then I watched the DVD one day...
The episode starts almost like a modern-Who story, introducing the main villains - lady Peintforte and her servant Robert (I think that's his name), and a group of Neo-Nazis (not referenced to as such on screen) with a very unmemorable and clearly not German leader. Oh, and they're in South America for some reason.
We then cut to find The Seventh Doctor and Ace enjoying a jazz band. They're having a nice time, but when the Doctor decides to leave, they're shot at by two people, and fall into a lake. For some reason these soldiers aren't explained (bit of a plot-hole). Anyway, the Doctor realises the Earth is in trouble when he spots that the Nemesis (hence the title; it's made partly of silver) and travels to Windsor, where he [nearly] meets the Queen!
It's a very silly episode, with quite a few gags, but that doesn't make a complete contrast to the darker elements of the story, which is great.
Then the Cybermen appear - with the second-to-worst voice modulation EVER, just beaten by the voices in Revenge. David Banks sounds awesome as the Cyberleader, but the rest? Let's not point out too many nit-picks mind.
The cast are brilliant - yes, even the rubbish American woman and the rather pantomime Pientiforte - particularly Sylvester and Sophie [Aldred, who plays Ace] and of course, who could forget the trademark Cyberleader David Banks?
The episode is enjoyable, with a few slightly too silly moments (that weird American woman and the two boys who get their clothes burned), and overall an enjoyable episode that leaves the viewer with many questions, mostly about the Doctor. It seems that both the Cybermen and the Daleks are dealt with, but who will it be next? I would be excited to see the answer to this question if it wasn't for the factor that this would be the show's penultimate season before it's 1989 cancellation.
Oh, and the Question is asked. Come on, 50th Anniversary!

8/10
