Marvel's Iron Man 3 (2013) - Movie Review
So, after the very successful first two films, not including his Avengers appearance, Iron Man 3 has been expected for a long time. Iron Man was the first film of 'The Avengers: Phase One' so Iron Man 3 is the first film in 'The Avengers: Phase Two'. While Iron Man was brilliant, Iron Man 2 was just pretty good. There was very little that stood out in this film, and there were many areas that felt either forced, de ja vu and just pointless. It wasn't bad - no, that was Captain America. This film, however, is very different to its predecessors and the other Avengers films, so it is really hard to review.
The film has Tony Stark narrating his life story from 1999 to now, and if you can sit through the entire credits (the music is quite cool) you will see that he has been talking to Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), AKA the Hulk, which is good as the two became friends in the Avengers Assemble and Stark appeared at the very end of The Incredibly Hulk. Tony in this film is a more realistic and changed man. His sickness and his crumbling relationship with the outside world really adds to this, and he has to support a relationship with Pepper Potts and stop the Mandarin. Overall, this is more realistic and interesting.
The Mandarin was a great and interesting character and very new himself, but the twist made it even more unique and the actual real evil behind the scenes is very new to the series. It reminds me of the Destroyer from Thor slightly and seems to be straight out of a comic book.
The Iron Patriot in this movie is a nice idea and kind of harks back to Captain America slightly. Rhodey, Pepper and the other supporting characters are great, and the real villain is fantastic. Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Kingsley steal the show, but Rebecca Hall is just a bit knaff. There's nothing interesting about her character and there's no real 'performance' from her which bags the movie down, especially when compared to Ben Kingsley. There is a really annoying kid which I won't talk about so beware of that. The music, direction, script, acting (for the most past), location filming, sets, costumes and twists make this a great and original film. To be honest, I won't say too much, but the opening with 'I'm Blue' was...bizarre to say the least. I'd give this film a:
