Superbowl Supreme 2018 - Trailer Reactions

'SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY'
Wait...this movie's not been delayed until December?
Despite the general news cycle and buzz in the run up to this film's release being pretty darn negative - the original director duo being fired, hasty re-shoots, actors even dropping out, even a new editor, and the (admittedly small, but vocal) backlash to 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' - we finally got a first-look teaser trailer for 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'. In fact, we got three: a Superbowl TV spot, a full-length teaser trailer and a selection of character posters! What's surprising is more how the film doesn't look nearly as exciting as it perhaps should. The colour palette is surprisingly dull, while the colour grading and general picture looks very flat and grey, more in line with 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' than either of the last two "saga" films or even Marvel's intergalactic outings. Alden Ehrenreich looks like a surprisingly "meh" choice to play Han, but what's particularly staggering is the focus on Han as part of this smuggling team being set up by Woody Harrelson. I was kind of expecting something more...well, solo, but the first look teases a team of outlaws akin to 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story', with Han, Chewie, Lando, a new Star Wars toy/robot character and Emilia Clarke adventuring through the galaxy on an early-days Millenium Falcon. I'm not sure if the end result will be amazing, but it looks like a fun, solid action piece.

'JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM'
This is a contractually-obligated sequel that Universal could have done something really interesting with, yet the end result is staggeringly mixed. A more horror-centric route has been teased with both trailers so far, but also alongside odd, out-of-place humour. This movie has an annoying sidekick who screams at the dinosaurs because...well, I guess someone thought it was a good idea. Some of the CGI looks pretty good, but some shots look very poorly-handled, considering that this is a franchise that made $1.6 billion last time around. The story initially seemed interesting, but this film is sending very mixed messages, and I feel like the trailers have revealed certain surprise moments. The T-Rex showing up out of nowhere in the first trailer, a guy threatening Owen and co is jumped on by a dinosaur, etc. I love dinosaurs, so I'll probably end up seeing this regardless, but so far I can't understand what Universal are going for here, other than to make another $1.6 billion at the box office.

'MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT'
I've thoroughly enjoyed the last three 'Mission: Impossible' movies, after getting into the franchise with 2015's 'Rogue Nation'. It looked like a lot of fun, was a lot of fun, and I was ready to come back for more. Thus, upon watching the trailer for 'Fallout', I felt a bit disappointed. Now, don't get me wrong, this looks like an action-packed, exhilarating roller-coaster ride of a film, but it also looks surprisingly serious. Is Ethan Hunt really an interesting character, or is he just an avatar by which Tom Cruise can attempt ridiculous stunts? The lack of humour or a sense of playfulness has me a little worried, but at the same time, ignoring the fact that franchise is so ridiculous that it really shouldn't be taken seriously (in my opinion), this looks like a pretty awesome action-flick, perhaps more in line with 'Mission: Impossible III' than 'Ghost Protocol' or 'Rogue Nation'.

'WESTWORLD': SEASON TWO
I know, I know, this is a TV show and not a movie, but have you seen this show? 'Westworld' might as well be a big-budget blockbuster given the production values! I'm fascinated to see what they're going to do with a second season, despite my hesitations about the actual narrative. This trailer...isn't actually very good, in that I had absolutely no reaction to it whatsoever, but what is worth noting is that the show is coming back in a big way, and I look forward to checking it out...whenever they release the Blu-ray boxset.

'AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR'
The biggest movie of the year looks like a spectacle not to be missed on the big screen. In anticipate some fans absolutely hating it, and some critics just being completely tired of the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for those who, like me, are more than happy to just sit and watch two and a half hours of fun characters banding together to stop a giant purple guy from assembling a bunch of magic glowing stones and destroying the universe (or something like that), this looks like a cracking time at the cinema, and perhaps the most enjoyable film of the year.
