Marvel's Inhumans - Episodes 5-8 Review

Alas, he we are at the end of what's technically a short but feels like a long Inhumans journey. Along the way we've had a surprisingly good twist, a decent musical score, Iwan Rheon and...yep, I've run out positives. The final two episodes of the series are what could be considered good...had the show not dropped the ball from day one, leaving us with weak and unlikable characters embarking on a cliched, predictable and often quite dull story. The conclusion to a better series is here, albeit not a perfect conclusion to a series that was quite poor in the first place.

Sitting through these two episodes, it occurred to me just how odd a design choice it was to have the Inhuman royal throne room as a plain grey set with a chair at the back of it. Surely if these are the royal family, there should be golds, purples, maybe even silvers? Hell, a better (and potentially even cheaper) alternative would've been to dress the throne room with various curtains, mixes of gold and purple, with the Inhuman flag (or logo I guess) imprinted on one of them above the throne, which really should've just been a normal throne as opposed to...whatever it is Maximus and Black Bolt sit on in the series. The sad thing is that I've had so little to invest in with this series that that's all I was thinking through some scenes.

Did I mention how good Iwan Rheon is? I mean, he does a terrific performance in this. Sure, the scripts are crap and the direction's probably limited to "oh, I dunno, be angry or something", but Rheon really runs with it, regardless of how ridiculous it all might seem. He brings a surprising amount of gravitas to a character who didn't really need any, especially considering that the actor playing Black Bolt has the screen presence of a pouty supermodel. Speaking of Black Bolt, why did he have such a ridiculously short cape in the final scene? It looked like a child's cape as opposed to the cloak of some great king. What was that? Oh yeah, I'm getting distracted by whatever I can find to interest me.

There's an odd loose end to this series though, that being of the coming threat to the Inhumans, which will be revealed...maybe in an episode of Agents of SHIELD, assuming that they're not too busy telling genuinely interesting stories about the team being stuck on an alien spaceship. Or teaming up with Ghost Rider. Or maybe even Blade, if recent rumours are to be believed. I'm really looking forward to that new season of SHIELD. Looks good.

Getting back to the Inhumans finale though, bringing both Triton and Gorgon back was just...terrible writing really. Whatever investment the audience may have had was lost, and frittered away because Scott Buck clearly doesn't know how to write a good Marvel show - or maybe any show given his track record. I mean, he gets a show about a bunch of superheroes who live on the moon and ensures that as little of it as possible can take place on the moon. Oh yeah, and Black Bolt only uses his powers three times in the entire show - and one was in a flashback. Medusa used her powers maybe once or twice. Triton...um...what were his powers again? Crystal didn't seem to do much other than summon Lockjaw...um...yeah, there's not much in the way of superpowers either.

If this series wasn't supposed to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I'd say that I was looking forward to the day that Marvel reclaimed the rights and rebooted it as this far-out whimsical sci-fi epic, but considering that this is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I don't know what to say. A soft-reboot of sorts in Agents of SHIELD would have worked if the characters were at least still living on the moon, but they're on Earth, an unavoidable situation that leaves the rest of the MCU in this awkward place. Wherever the Inhumans ended up on Earth, I guess the Avengers, Defenders, Agents of SHIELD and the Guardians of the Galaxy will never end up there. You know who I feel sorry for though? The poor whatsits like myself who'll have to buy this series on Blu-ray to complete their MCU collection. It's even more frustrating than Spider-Man: Homecoming's blu-ray design - which, for the record, neither matches the previous Spider-Man blu-rays released by Sony or the other MCU blu-rays. Pain in the arse.
