Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Season 3, Episodes 21 & 22 Review

So, here we are at Agents of SHIELD's third season finale, and one can't help but feel a little underwhelmed. After so much build-up, season 3 ends in the most bog-standard way it could, and I just feel like this two-part finale could have been so much more if it tried.
The first part, 'Absolution', was pretty slow if I'm honest, especially after the opening 10 minutes rushed along so quickly I barely had time to register where the show had left off a couple of weeks since I last saw it. There was a big thing about Daisy suffering withdrawal symptoms, but nothing much really came of that other than depression and causing the episode's cliffhanger. I was waiting for something to really happen in 'Absolution', and it seems that the writers hadn't quite worked out what to do with it and the following part.
'Ascension' was a much better-paced second part, even if the final third was a bit lackluster. None of the action felt like it had been kicked up a notch, and Daisy's big confrontation with Hive felt more confusing than cheer-worthy. Is Daisy no longer wanting to join Hive now? Is she back in control, or is she just...attacking him for some reason.
The "primitives" created by Radcliffe are still incredibly dull henchmen who don't even look that great or original. They're basically the Silence from Doctor Who, but without the interesting abilities and just acting as a faceless army for Hive to command. Why Hive wants to fill the world with them isn't entirely clear, especially as they're pretty useless Inhumans for the most part. Didn't quite add up.
Oh, but of course the fallen agent the show wanted to build-up was Lincoln, who sent himself and Hive up into space in one of the most contrived shock-twists I've seen in a while. How the hell did he beat Daisy when she left before him? I understand one has to push their suspension of disbelief in these superhero shows, but really? Lincoln and Hive's death went on forever, and the show decided they wanted to throw in a quick line to make Hive seem more justified ("I was trying to do the right thing"). The scene wasn't help by the abysmal use of slow-motion which just killed the mood for the most part. Apart from that, it was pretty well pulled-off, and if the series sticks with the characters' deaths and doesn't bring them back, I imagine it'll work quite well in retrospect.
But before you have a chance for the characters to grieve Lincoln's death, it suddenly cuts to six months later in an incredibly sudden edit and tonal change. Coulson is no longer the director of SHIELD (for some reason) and is hunting down Daisy (for some reason) who was helping or maybe just chatting to the family of...urm...nope, can't remember his name, but he was the Inhuman who could see the future. Anyway, that scene...urm...happened, and then got followed up with a poorly-handled mystery box scene showing Dr Radcliffe create a robot...because that was set-up in no time at all.
Overall, the season 3 finale was good, but not great. There's a genuine sense of being underwhelmed, and its a real shame the show couldn't stick the landing in the final two episodes. 7/10

PS: that Star Wars reference was a lot of fun. Good old Coulson!

  1. Click agents of shield season 3 netflix watch free online now. A show based on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D ., well to any marvel fan be it of the comics or the movies is intriguing enough. To follow up on some of the biggest blockbusters of Hollywood and one the biggest comic book franchise is not a walk in the park. So the first question is did they actually pull of something that is good and long lasting?? I would say.. yeah they did!

I am the guy that likes both sides of the coin, Marvel and DC comics and their superheros. You cant really compare the Marvel's movie series and the Dark Knight series, they are both equally brilliant but are on different ends of the spectrum. Having said that, I've always felt that Marvel's movie series is always fun to go on a ride with, fun, interesting, lovable and intriguing all at the same time. So a series based on the organization that keeps these superheros and their egos in check is something I love.

I keep talking about the movies and not the comics cause this show is based more on the movies and characters from these movies. So any movie enthusiast, like me, would instantly love it.

The cast is brilliant, full of characters we will immediately love. Clark Gregg ( Tony Stark: "Phil?" Uh, his first name is "Agent." ) is brilliant and funny as always. Rest of the cast is well chosen and are really good at playing their respective roles. Joss Whedon and co have done a good job with the pilot and hopefully over the entire series.

The series gives us a look into what is S.H.I.E.L.D besides what little we are shown in the movies. There is a lot of technology as expected, Special effects and explosions as expected. The show dwells on what happens in the background away from all the big superheros on a more human side of the Marvel's series.

Would I recommend this to anyone? Yes i would. If you like the Marvel Movies or if you like to watch a series that's pure fun and hopefully adrenaline filled then give this a try, you will surely like it!! Lets Hope the coming episodes are just as fun as the pilot!! Bring it on Joss!! Watch movies on watch32 very great!
