Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Episode 21 Review

Ward's past is revealed...
Upon writing this review, I think back over the series so far in a sort of retrospective which can only be had at the end of a long-running series. I haven't had this sort of retrospective in a long time, probably not since the last series of Doctor Who (which finished over a year ago), which brings to light why I love having something like Agents of SHIELD to get me through the weeks and months. Basically, I enjoy SHIELD not only as a fan of the MCU but also as a TV viewer who likes long-running Television series. Or maybe I'm looking too deeply into this. Oh well...
At long last my hopes for Agent Ward have been answered! His history has been revealed and suddenly a lot more seems clearer with his character. I think the most emotional scene this series was him holding a gun to his dog. The flashback sequences were great, even if having two young Agent Ward's looking nothing alike was a bit odd. I think his character works as a tortured villain than a hardcore hero, as Brett Dalton doesn't have enough to do as a good guy. Agent Triplett has been playing his role for a few weeks now and I instantly like him much more. He has a not-too-complicated background and has a nice charm to him that makes him a like-able specialist agent. He is in the same field as Ward, but just comes across as more of a human being. Ward just works so much better like this, for me at least.
I'm also glad we can get over with the Ward/Skye romance which I had dreaded at the beginning of the series and when finally came to fruition I was waiting for him to become the traitor. I think Skye doesn't need a love interest, especially two in the same season, and Ward and May I felt worked much better. I honestly hope that Skye doesn't fall over anyone else at all. I just think she's too independent for that to work.
Another thing I'm happy with is that we finally have the Super Soldiers back - and it turns out that they were in fact Guinea pigs for Garrett to test the Centipede serum on before himself. Now Raina has cured Garrett with GH325 (I think that's it), our Clairvoyant is a super soldier...ish. Meanwhile, Ian Quinn is selling the super soldiers to the US Government, because that's a good idea! I'm not sure how this fits in with Extremis, or whether Cybertek has anything to do with Arim Zola and the Winter Soldier, but we might find out at some point.
We do have a fantastic Cybertek sub-plot though, with Coulson and May breaking in. It's a great sequence and the reference to the Howling Commandos is great, even if I have no idea who's son Triplett is. Yep, The First Avenger failed at a whole group of Captain America characters, and still the rest of the MCU is suffering from it. Anyway, the use of classic gadgets is fantastic.
The episode ends with Garrett now with GH325, Ward having supposedly killed Fitz and Simmons and the rest of Coulson's team cornered by Super Soldiers...
Overall, what a great episode! I'm interested to see where next week will take us, but it should be good!
