The Tomorrow People (US) - Episode 13 REVIEW

The Tomorrow People has gone on many ups and downs over the past twelve episodes. At points when I wanted to stop watching the series, it would come back with an amazing and fantastic episode. Then, there would either be an okay or pretty poor episode, putting me off again.
This episode follows Cassie – daughter of the Founder – which allows for some interesting plot twists. While the revelation about her being the Founder’s daughter may be a rather predictable twist just to keep the audience hooked into the opening titles (and on E4, the first advert break), somehow it makes sense. Easily my favourite scene in the episode is when the Founder confronts Jedikiah. Their conversation shows their relationship with each other brilliantly and how both, despite being horrible excuses for people, have their own weak spots. Their reactions when Jedikiah mentions Cassie are priceless. Jedikiah’s smile of victory and smugness and the Founder’s of “I’ll get you next time” demonstrate both actors’ abilities and how entertaining the characters truly are.
Sadly, the main focus of the episode is on Cassie herself. She’s a synergist (she wants her powers removed) and has missing memories from experiments that the Founder has been conducting on her. Her British accent though is one of the most forced and awful attempts I have ever heard. If that is her real voice (which I doubt) then it sounds so fake. Each line is forced and the pronunciations are all over the place. This is worse than Don Cheadle’s cockney accent in Ocean’s Eleven! And I complained about Summer Glau’s accent attempt in Firefly...
She ultimately comes across as an unlikeable character. Maybe she’s really popular in the US or something, but her acting is ‘meh’ and her accent is awful, so she isn’t popular with me at all.
This is the episode’s biggest problem, as we’re meant to feel sorry for her by the end. Her dodgy accent and lack of emotion cause her fate to become almost wanted.
Anyway, if Stephen finds Cassandra, the Founder has promised Astrid’s safety. Stephen may have quit Ultra, but the Founder is relying on him. This is an excellent premise for the episode, and I’m looking forward to seeing the two actors’ confront each other again in the future. Of course, the Founder goes back on his word and hunts Astrid down...
Meanwhile, Cara is basically trying to gain control over the Tomorrow People, but John is finding it difficult to listen to her. His handing over of Cassie leads him to exile.
I really liked Cara at first. She was a character with an upsetting background but stubborn. Since becoming a leader for the Tomorrow People, she has become slightly irritating in her stubbornness. It simply doesn’t work, and her decision to exile John is worthy of a punch in the face!
The episode concludes on an amazing cliff-hanger. It adds a brand-new twist to the show, and I sure am interested in the future of the series.
Overall, the episode had ups and downs, but is worthy of a solid: 7/10
