Best Films Of 2012

2012 was a year that many people will remember for a long time, with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics and Paralympics, Marvel's Avengers Assemble setting Box Office records, etc...
Oh well. I have seen 13 films from 2012 (that I can remember) that I have decided to put in a top 13 list, with a score for each film.

  • DARK SHADOWS - A rather tedious film full Johnny Depp-isms and boring plot revelations that are utterly pointless. The entertainment factor is ruined by a rather boring plot that has no structure and little emotion. Eva Green is excellent as the witch though, and the actress playing Vicky is very good but extremely underused, which is a shame considering she was the most interesting and complex character of the entire film. Oh, and the less said about the narration and the ending, the better. (3/10)
  • HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA - I was dragged to see this by some friends against my will, and I regretted paying to see this film. It was a re-hash of lots of previous (and better) animated films, with elements of Despicable Me that were so blatantly obvious that I felt I was watching a parody of the film, only more Halloween-esque. The characters are archetypal, the twists predictable and the musical moments....urgh. (3/10)
  • THE BOURNE LEGACY - As I have never seen a Bourne film before, I had no idea what to expect from this film. All is really knew was that Jeremy Renner was some bloke like another bloke. Yep, that's pretty vague. However, this film was as dull as hell. The action sequences were badly spaced out and what happened in between was just plain dull, like the story and some of the action. Jeremy Renner did a good job with the role he had, but there isn't enough for him to act with. The film has no idea what kind of story to tell, and it seems that only Edward Norton is really trying to make this film better than it actually is. Some intriguing plot elements are never really covered properly and the ending is a disappointment. (3/10)
  • MEN IN BLACK 3 - I was expecting more from this film, but there really wasn't anything that good in there. It has some good moments, but some little things are just left barley explained and Agent K looks a bit too old to be in MIB still. Will Smith is brilliant as J though. (5/10)
  • THE HUNGER GAMES - A film with some flaws but an enjoyable film with a definitely interesting and dark storyline. (6/10)
  • THE PIRATES! IN AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS - An enjoyable film, aimed at a much younger audience than myself, of course. Only David Tennant's Charles Darwin disappoints that much. Nothing brilliant, but solid entertainment. (6/10)
  • THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN - A interesting take on the story, but lots of classic Spidey elements are cut from the movie, and the Lizard looks pretty bad, considering the budget for the film. Lets hope the sequel, coming out next year, does not disappoint. (6/10)
  • JOHN CARTER - An enjoyable film which has excellent production values and a very good cast. It feels there should be a bit more in the actual story, but on the whole a film that is enjoyable to watch and is very underrated. In many ways its a pity it did so badly, as a sequel would be interesting to see, but unlikely to happen. (6/10)
  • THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - A good conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, but there is not enough actual Batman and the pacing in the first half is way too slow. Oh, and why is John Blake Robin? Shouldn't he be Dick Grayson? (7/10)
  • THE WOMAN IN BLACK - A spine-chilling ghost story. Daniel Radcliffe is brilliant and its nice to see how diverse an actor he is. The Woman in Black herself is terrifying and the cinematography and editing is worthy of several awards. A definite recommend. (8/10)
  • MARVEL'S AVENGERS ASSEMBLE - an excellent film that does what it says on the tin. The FX and cast and script are all brilliant, and only the score by Alan Sylvestri disappoints. Why did they kill off Phil!? (9/10)
  • SKYFALL - a perfect Bond film with a great balance of action and story. The cast are excellent and even ADELE's song works well. (10/10)
  • THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY - a brilliant start to the trilogy, but I would recommend watching it a couple of time to get the full scope of the story and all of the build-up elements. The cast are excellent and Peter Jackson has created a brilliant film. Bring on The Desolation of Smaug I say! (10/10)
