Marvel's Thor: The Dark World (2013) - Movie Review

After the fantastic Iron Man 3 (2013) earlier in the year, Thor: The Dark World (2013) follows on from Marvel's Avengers Assemble (2012) and Thor (2011), both of which were very good films. The Dark World was truly brilliant though.
Right from the off, there is change in place. Marvel now have a new title card, although I preferred the last one, which looks quite flash with a theme for it. I hope we can have original film music playing over it where necessary in the future, as it does work for films like Iron Man 3 (2013) with "I'm Blue".
The darker tones of this movie are brilliantly placed alongside some great comedy, with Joss Whedon's fingertips all over some scenes. The comedy makes the darker tones less grim (and they would be very grim without any humour) and the darker tones allow the comedy to have more impact on the audience.
The music is by Brian Tyler, who composed the score for Iron Man 3 (2013), and it has a great impact. Easily the sad music ("Lokasenna", “Into Enternity” and “The Trial of Loki”) is the highlight of the soundtrack, but the grand score is just fantastic on the whole, like Tyler's previous works.
The acting is fantastic, and the stand-out is from Tom Hiddleston. The dude is the best actor of the Avengers films as a whole. His mere presence is amazing. Oh, and there is one scene where all of Loki's faith is utterly destroyed, which not only changes him and Thor, but leads to a scene where Loki just reveals his true emotions. You don't see exactly what he does, but you see how it affects him. This makes Loki more unpredictable than ever, and his revenge on Thor in the end to confront Malekith will make audiences fear the God of Mischief, as he is not to be trifled with. A pity some reporter revealed it in an interview. Damn journalists. Idris Elba (who is pretty awesome), Chris Hemsworth, Christopher Eccleston and Anthony Hopkins all give memorable performances, and I hope this gets Eccleston the fame he deserves as an actor, although the editing to his voice was completely unnecessary, as the guy has an awesome voice already.
The cinematography, special and visual FX are great and the script is unpredictable and very interesting. There is a real character arc for Loki, that is now pretty much complete, and his relationship with Thor is now filled with vengeance and hatred, and his actions as to why he helps Thor for the time he does is justified in such a way that it is not out of character for him. Tom Hiddleston is perfect in the role.

Overall, despite a (minor) continuity error (that my mum picked out near the end, on screen) and one dodgy FX shot, Thor: The Dark World (2013) is a practically perfect film. A must-see and the cliff-hanger and end credits scenes are also brilliant. I am really looking forward to see what happens next. (9/10)
